2014 Moving Mountains Award Recognizes Excellence in the Direct Support Workplace
Since 2002, the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals and the Research & Training Center on Community Living at the University of Minnesota have been bestowing the Moving Mountains Award on outstanding organizations that utilize “best practice in direct support staff workforce development that results in improved outcomes for the people being supported.”
This year’s recipients are The Resource Center in Jamestown, New York and Monarch, Inc. in Albemarle, North Carolina. The winners will be honored at the 2014 Reinventing Quality Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Resource Center was recognized thanks to its commitment to training its DSPs through its P.A.C.T. certification program. P.A.C.T.—which stands for People Achieving Certification Together—was developed to help the Resource Center’s DSPs obtain DSP-C level certification through the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP).
According to the organization’s website, P.A.C.T. consisted of assigned educational modules using the DirectCourse/College of Direct Support (CDS) curriculum, working with a facilitator, peer mentoring, and encouraging DSPs to share their knowledge in order to obtain their NADSP certification. Four Resource Center employees received their certification, and now others are using P.A.C.T. to become certified as well.
Monarch, Inc. was recognized for their development of the Personal Outcome Measurements/Helping Dreams Take Flight program. Recognizing that their DSPs are their most important resource, Monarch began implementing Personal Outcome Measurements back in 2008, as a part of DSP accreditation through The Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL). This program allows DSPs to work more closely with the people they support, to help both parties determine what best constitutes quality of life care, and to help determine individual paths. This empowers both DSPs and the people they support.
The DirectCourse/College of Direct Support congratulates The Resource Center and Monarch, Inc. for winning these prestigious awards. Their commitment to their DSPs will help empower these critical employees and improve the lives of the people they support.
